LIT

A theatre lighting control system based on Human Centric Lighting

Initial challenge

To design a lighting system that allows users to control different types of lights in different areas of a theatre, taking into account “Human Centric Lighting” and energy consumption.

Strategic search

We analysed the elements that influence theatre lighting:

  • Area to be lit

  • Scenic elements

  • Lighting type

  • Types of spotlights

  • Light sources

  • Features of light

We searched the distinctive features of the theatres in the area and we discovered “The Gayarre Experience”:

A project that deepens the experience of attending and living the performance of a play from the inside.

Teatro Gayarre

Gayarre Theatre (Pamplona)

The Gayarre experience

We considered it as an opportunity to aim this experience at students in the audiovisual field.

Exploration

We interviewed a number of theatre users to understand the theatre lighting process and verify the need of students to put their knowledge into practice.

FIELD RESEARCH

We interviewed

2 students in the audiovisual field

"We cannot put into practice the theoretical contents acquired"

We visited

The interior of the Amaia Theatre

"Design the plan, position the spotlights & cofigure parameters"

We spoke with

2 lighting and sound technicians

"The current trend in theatres is to use LED spotlights"

Based on the previous analysis, we defined the user of our digital system, their needs, objectives, the tasks to be performed and the context of use.

PERSONAS  •  BRIEF

User LIT
Context LIT

A system that allows a student in the audiovisual field to live, in the Gayarre Theatre, a complete experience of the process of stage lighting, from design to execution.

Ideation & development

We defined both the user and technical requirements. We grouped together the functions of the system, we organised the information and designed its skeleton.

  • Design of the lighting plan

  • Control of stage lighting

  • Control of the general lighting of the theatre

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE  •  WIREFRAMES

Final result

LIT

An application to experience the role of lighting technician through digital design of lighting plans, modification of spotlights, assignment of physical and channel positioning and recording of their configuration in order to remotely control the lights and to obtain the approximate consumption of each show.

Stage lighting design

By means of spotlights, lighting plan and consumption calculation.

Consumption

Control of three types of lights

The maintenance lights and the working lights at the back of the stage, the auditorium area and the stage lights.

Tested prototype

We carried out tests based on the execution of numerous guided tasks (in person and remotely) and on filling out a use questionnaire to detect problems and possible solutions.

Thanks to them we concluded that the aspects to maintain are ease of use and learning, usefulness and personal satisfaction.

We tested the app with

The technical director of the Gayarre Theatre and 3 other users
